Берша лучше ловить в русловых ямах, срубах, затопленных коряжниках, в местах подводных возвышенностей либо на фарватере с глубинами 14 м и больше. Берш зимой питается мало, в основном личинками насекомых, червями, ракообразными и молодью рыб. Взрослые особи берша очень похожи на судака, но отличаются меньшим размером и весом от судака. Максимальный вес берша может достигать 2 кг, а особи весом 300-500 г считаются приличным трофеем рыбака-любителя. Другими отличиями берша от судака являются отсутствие клыков на челюстях у берша, сплошное покрытие чешуей жаберных крышек, отсутствие горба между головой и первым спинным плавником.
